BY COINCIDENCE, my Super Bowl cocktail this year is the Tom & Jerry. I just discovered this drink and I’m crazy about it.
When I first heard of the Tom & Jerry I was told the recipe called for gin, lemon and sugar. (That was in London. When I googled the drink here, only a kind of egg nog comes up! But I’m sticking with the one I had at the top of the Shard.) Only after I learned more about cocktails did I realize that gin drinks containing the word Tom like a Tom Collins or a Tom & Jerry might be meant for Old Tom gin, not your modern gin, so I tried it. It was good. Unfortunately, worthwhile Old Tom is hard to find so you might not be able to grab it on the fly. I am loving Ransoms. Here’s the recipe for two Tom & Jerrys:
5 ounces Old Tom gin (Ransoms)
2.5 ounces fresh lemon juice
1.5 ounces simple syrup (half sugar half water boiled in the microwave or on the stove–cool before using)
Shake all ingredients with ice then strain into a coupe or martini glass with a twist of lemon.
